Cost of Remodeling in 2016

How Much Will My Remodel Cost?

This is probably the toughest question for anyone to answer without knowing the specifics of what you’re trying to do. There are a few questions you can ask yourself that will help narrow it down.

Remodeling is an exciting time! You’ve thought long and hard about that new kitchen, bathroom, or garage and now it’s time to be realistic about the budget. Here are a few things to consider.

Make A List, Check It Twice

This is the part where you look at every component of the remodel. Place everything into two categories: “must have” and “nice to have”. If you’re doing a bathroom remodel, things like pipes, walls and paint would be in the “must have” section. However, the tile shower could be “nice to have” if you can also get away with a pre-formed shower.

Once you have your list made up, estimate how much each item will cost. This is where you’ll likely move it from one column to another as your budget becomes clear.

Will Does The Remodel Affect?

If you’re looking at expanding a bedroom, you may have to move pipes and other in-wall elements. This can drive up the cost significantly. If you’re putting in a new hot tub, you may have to run new electrical lines. It’s important to think about all the areas your remodel will affect. If you overlook one little thing in the planning process, it can be expensive to deal with later.

How Much Time Do You Have?

The faster you need the remodel finished, the more it’s going to cost. If you’re trying to get it done on a time limit – like if you’re expecting company, or want to sell your home – this is where costs can skyrocket. A quicker timeline usually means hiring more people. It can also lead to rushing things and having an expensive mistake or two pop up. If you can stretch the project out and handle most of the work yourself, you can likely save quite a bit.

No matter what your budget, be flexible. Budget for at least a 10 to 15 percent cost overrun. Most projects don’t stay on budget, and surprises often pop up when least expected.
